A GHS label is the standardized hazard label OSHA requires on containers of hazardous chemicals in your workplace. GHS stands for the Globally Harmonized System, and it sets a common format so a bottle of degreaser reads the same way whether it came from a supplier in Ohio or one in Germany. If you buy, store, or pour out any chemical stronger than dish soap, GHS labeling is part of your OSHA HazCom obligations, and a missing or wrong label is one of the easiest things for an inspector to spot.

What is a GHS label and why does OSHA require it?
GHS is the international rulebook for how chemical hazards get communicated. OSHA adopted it into its Hazard Communication Standard, which lives at 29 CFR 1910.1200. That regulation is the “right to know” rule: your employees have a legal right to know what chemicals they work around and how those chemicals can hurt them. The label on the container is the fast version of that information, and the safety data sheet is the long version.
Before GHS, every manufacturer labeled things their own way. One bottle said “harmful,” another said “caution,” and workers had no reliable way to compare them. GHS fixed that by standardizing the words, the symbols, and the order they appear in.
Here is the part that trips people up. OSHA doesn’t just care about the labels that arrive on shipped products. It cares about every container that holds a hazardous chemical in your workplace, and it holds you, the employer, responsible for keeping those labels intact and accurate. What are the six required elements of a GHS label?
A compliant GHS label on a shipped container has six parts. Miss one and the label isn’t compliant. Here they are in plain terms.

Product identifier. The name or number that matches the chemical to its safety data sheet. This could be the product name, a code, or the chemical name. The point is that a worker can connect the container to the right SDS.

Signal word. There are only two: “Danger” and “Warning.” Danger is the more severe hazard. Warning is the less severe one. A label uses one or the other, never both.

Hazard statements. Short standardized phrases that describe the hazard, like “Causes serious eye damage” or “Highly flammable liquid and vapor.” The wording is set by GHS, so it reads the same everywhere.

Precautionary statements. The what-to-do lines. These cover prevention, response, storage, and disposal, for example “Wear protective gloves” or “If in eyes, rinse cautiously with water for several minutes.”

Supplier information. The name, address, and phone number of the manufacturer, importer, or distributor. If a worker needs more detail, this is who they call.
That is the label a manufacturer is required to ship to you. Your responsibility starts the moment that container comes through the door and continues for anything you pour out of it.
What do the nine GHS pictograms mean?
Pictograms are the quickest read on any GHS label. There are nine of them. Eight are used under OSHA HazCom, and one, the environmental symbol, is optional under OSHA because it covers environmental rather than worker-health hazards. Here is each one in plain English.
- Flame. Flammable. Catches fire easily. Also covers self-heating and self-reactive materials.
- Flame over a circle. Oxidizer. Feeds a fire and makes it burn hotter, even without normal air.
- Exploding bomb. Explosive, self-reactive, or an organic peroxide. Can blow up under heat, shock, or friction.
- Gas cylinder. Gas under pressure. Compressed, liquefied, or refrigerated gas that can burst or leak.
- Corrosion. Corrosive. Burns skin and eyes, and can eat through metal. Think strong acids and drain cleaners.
- Skull and crossbones. Acute toxicity. Can make you seriously ill or kill you in small amounts. This is the serious-poison symbol.
- Health hazard. The figure with the star burst on the chest. Longer-term or serious health effects: carcinogens, reproductive toxicity, respiratory sensitizers, or organ damage.
- Exclamation mark. Lower-level hazards: skin or eye irritation, drowsiness, or a substance that is harmful if swallowed. Real, but less severe.
- Environment. The dead tree and fish. Toxic to aquatic life. This is the optional one under OSHA HazCom.
You don’t need to memorize all nine. You do need your crew to recognize the big ones, especially flame, corrosion, and the skull, because those show up in everyday products like solvents, cleaners, and fuels. Shipped-container label vs. workplace label: what’s the difference?
This is the distinction that matters most for a small business, so it is worth slowing down.
A shipped-container label is the full six-element GHS label described above. Manufacturers, importers, and distributors are legally required to put it on every container of hazardous chemical they send out. When a drum, jug, or case arrives at your door already labeled, that is a shipped-container label, and someone else did that work. Your job is simply to not deface it and not remove it.
A workplace label, sometimes called a secondary-container label, is the one you are responsible for creating. The moment you pour a chemical out of its original shipped container into a spray bottle, a bucket, a smaller jug, or any other container, you have made a secondary container. OSHA still expects that container to be labeled, because the worker holding the spray bottle has the same right to know what’s inside.
OSHA gives you two ways to label a workplace container under 29 CFR 1910.1200(f)(6). Option one is to reproduce the full GHS label. Option two is to use the product identifier plus words, pictures, symbols, or a combination that gives the worker general information about the hazards. Either is acceptable, as long as the worker can identify the chemical and understand how it can hurt them. There is one narrow exception. If you transfer a chemical into a portable container for your own immediate use, and it’s used up within your shift by the same person who filled it, you don’t have to label that one. The second it sits overnight, gets handed to a coworker, or outlasts the shift, the exception is gone and it needs a label.
Where is a small business actually responsible for labeling?
Here is the honest opinion after years of watching these inspections: shipped labels almost never get shops in trouble, because the manufacturer already did that part. The write-ups come from secondary containers.
Picture the mislabeled spray bottle of degreaser under the shop sink. The bucket of parts cleaner with a strip of masking tape and no hazard information. The unlabeled jug someone filled from a drum. Every one of those is a secondary container, and every one is your responsibility, not the manufacturer’s. An inspector who sees a spray bottle with no identity and no hazard information has found a clean HazCom violation.
The stakes are real money. OSHA penalties for 2026 run up to $16,550 per serious violation, and willful or repeated violations can reach $165,514 per violation. A labeling gap is one of the cheapest problems to fix and one of the more expensive ones to ignore. Is a GHS label the same as a HazCom label?
Effectively, yes. “HazCom label” is the everyday name for the labeling OSHA requires under its Hazard Communication Standard, and OSHA built that labeling around the GHS format. When someone says HazCom label, they mean a GHS-style label with the required elements.
Do I have to label a spray bottle I filled myself?
Usually, yes. A spray bottle you fill from a larger container is a secondary container and needs a workplace label with the product identifier and hazard information. The only exception is a container you fill for your own immediate use and empty within your shift. Overnight, shared, or shift-outlasting containers all need labels.
What are the two GHS signal words?
Just two: “Danger” and “Warning.” Danger marks the more severe hazards, and Warning marks the less severe ones. A label carries one signal word, never both, based on the most serious hazard the chemical presents.
Are all nine pictograms required by OSHA?
