The safety data sheet (SDS) for hydrochloric acid tells you, in 16 fixed sections, how to store it, what protective gear your crew needs, what to do if it hits skin, and what it must never be mixed with. Hydrochloric acid, sold in diluted form as muriatic acid, is a corrosive liquid that gives off irritating fumes, so the sheet is not paperwork you file and forget. Why does hydrochloric acid need an SDS?

Hydrochloric acid is a hazardous chemical under OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard, so any business that stores or uses it has to keep a safety data sheet for it. That is true whether the drum says hydrochloric acid or the jug from the pool store says muriatic acid. Muriatic acid is just hydrochloric acid at a lower concentration, usually 20 to 35 percent, and it carries the same corrosive hazards.

The sheet is written by the manufacturer and travels with the product. If you buy the acid, you are owed the sheet, and you are responsible for having the current version on hand. Older documents were called MSDS, or material safety data sheets. Since the 2012 update that aligned OSHA with the global GHS system, every sheet follows the same 16-section order, which makes them fast to read. What do the 16 sections tell you?

Every SDS runs in the same order. You do not need all 16 memorized, but you should know where to look.

  1. Identification: product name, manufacturer, emergency phone.
  2. Hazard identification: corrosive and irritant warnings, signal word, pictograms.
  3. Composition: what is in it and at what concentration.
  4. First aid: skin, eye, inhalation, and ingestion response.
  5. Firefighting: acid does not burn, but nearby fire can drive off its fumes.
  6. Accidental release: spill cleanup and containment.
  7. Handling and storage.
  8. Exposure controls and PPE: gloves, eye protection, ventilation.
  9. Physical and chemical properties: appearance, odor, pH.
  10. Stability and reactivity: what it reacts with.
  11. Toxicological information: health effects from exposure.
    12 through 15 cover ecological, disposal, transport, and regulatory information.
  12. Other information, including the revision date.

The sections your crew will use on a normal day are 2, 4, 7, 8, and 10. Section 16 matters more than people think, because that revision date is how you confirm the sheet in your hand matches the product on your shelf. My honest opinion: most small teams over-focus on having a sheet and under-focus on having the right one. A three-year-old sheet for a reformulated product is a gap an inspector can find.

What are the hazards and PPE?

Section 2 will label hydrochloric acid as corrosive, and it means it. Contact causes serious skin burns and eye damage, and the concentrated liquid can scar. The vapor irritates the eyes, nose, throat, and lungs. Open a fresh jug of muriatic acid in a closed pump room and you will feel it fast.

Section 8 spells out the protective equipment. For routine handling, that generally means chemical-splash goggles or a face shield, gloves rated for acid such as nitrile or neoprene, and clothing that keeps it off your skin. The same section addresses ventilation. Handle the acid with good airflow, and in tight spaces the sheet may call for local exhaust. Most small-business exposures happen from pouring acid where there is no air movement.

One honest limitation: the SDS tells you the hazards and the controls, but it does not train your people. Handing someone the sheet is not the same as HazCom training, and OSHA treats those as separate obligations. How should you store it, and what can it never touch?

Sections 7 and 10 keep a small spill from becoming a hospital trip. Store hydrochloric acid in its original, closed, labeled container, in a cool, well-ventilated place away from direct sun and heat. Keep it low, not on a high shelf where a dropped jug rains acid down on someone. Acid-resistant secondary containment, even a simple tray, buys you time when a container weeps or cracks.

The incompatibilities are the part people get wrong. Read them out loud to whoever handles the acid:

  • Bases and alkalis, such as sodium hydroxide or caustic cleaners. Acid plus base reacts violently and throws heat.
  • Metals, including many common ones. Hydrochloric acid corrodes metal and can release flammable hydrogen gas.
  • Bleach and other oxidizers. Mixing hydrochloric acid with bleach, such as sodium hypochlorite, releases toxic chlorine gas. This is the classic janitorial-closet accident, and it has killed people.

The practical rule: keep acids and bases apart, keep acid away from bleach, and never store the acid where it can mix with anything if a bottle tips. What does the SDS say for a spill or exposure?

Section 4, first aid, is the one you want your crew to read before they need it, not during. For skin contact, remove contaminated clothing and rinse with plenty of water for an extended period, often 15 to 20 minutes, then get medical attention. For eyes, flush immediately with water while holding the eyelids open, then get prompt care. For ingestion, do not induce vomiting, rinse the mouth, and call for medical help. Follow the exact wording on your sheet, because it is specific to that product.

Section 6, accidental release, covers spills. In plain terms: clear the area, ventilate, put on the PPE from section 8, and contain the spill with an absorbent meant for acids. Do not hose a large acid spill down a drain, and do not reach for it barehanded with a shop rag. For any spill beyond a small, manageable amount, the sheet expects a plan and the right materials staged nearby.

The theme across both sections is speed, and speed depends on access. If the eyewash instructions are in a binder two rooms away, the sheet is not doing its job. That is what OSHA means by readily accessible, and it is the whole point of the SDS access rules for readily accessible sheets.

Where does hydrochloric acid show up in small businesses?

You may have hydrochloric acid on site without thinking of it as a lab chemical, because it is a workhorse in a lot of trades. It commonly turns up in:

  • Pool and spa maintenance, where muriatic acid lowers pH and cleans surfaces.
  • Masonry and concrete work, where diluted muriatic acid etches, cleans, and removes mortar haze and efflorescence.
  • Metal finishing and fabrication, where it is used for pickling and rust removal.
  • Janitorial and building maintenance, where acid-based cleaners handle heavy scale and hard-water buildup.

Yes, in substance. Muriatic acid is hydrochloric acid at a lower, commercial-grade concentration, so its safety data sheet covers the same corrosive and fume hazards. Always use the sheet that matches your specific product and concentration, since the numbers reflect what is actually in the container.

What is the difference between an SDS and an MSDS for hydrochloric acid?
