Where does sodium hydroxide show up, and why does the SDS matter?
Sodium hydroxide is one of the most common industrial chemicals a small business will have without thinking of itself as a chemical operation. It turns up as caustic soda in industrial cleaning and degreasing, as the active ingredient in heavy-duty drain products, in food processing and cleaning-in-place systems, in water treatment for pH adjustment, and in soap making, where lye is the whole point.
It comes as flakes, pellets, beads, or a liquid solution, and every form is corrosive. The CAS number on the sheet is 1310-73-2, and the signal word reads Danger, the higher of the two GHS severity words.
Here is the part owners underestimate. Sodium hydroxide does not need to be concentrated to send someone to urgent care. A splash in the eye can cause damage in seconds, and skin contact can produce deep burns because the chemical does not stop at the surface. Under OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard, 29 CFR 1910.1200, you have to keep the SDS for every hazardous chemical on site and make it available to employees. A missing or unreachable sheet is a citable violation, and OSHA penalties for a serious violation run up to $16,550, with willful or repeated violations reaching $165,514.
How do you read a sodium hydroxide safety data sheet?
Every SDS follows the same 16-section order. That consistency helps: once you know where a piece of information lives, you find it in the same place on any product’s sheet.
The 16 sections run: identification, hazard identification, composition, first aid, firefighting, accidental release, handling and storage, exposure controls and PPE, physical and chemical properties, stability and reactivity, toxicological information, ecological information, disposal, transport, regulatory information, and other information.
You do not need to memorize all sixteen. For day-to-day work, a small business lives in five of them: Sections 2, 4, 6, 7, and 8. Sections 9 through 16 cover disposal, shipping, and regulatory detail you reach for less often.
If I had to name the one section owners skip that they should not, it is Section 10, stability and reactivity. That is where the sheet lists what sodium hydroxide reacts with, and those reactions are what turn a storage decision into an incident.
What are the hazards and first aid steps?
Section 2, hazard identification, is the top of the sheet for a reason. For sodium hydroxide you will see it classified for skin corrosion and serious eye damage, with the hazard statement “Causes severe skin burns and eye damage” (coded H314 under GHS). You will also see it flagged as corrosive to metals, marked with the corrosion pictogram.
Section 4, first aid, is the section you want your crew to have read before they ever need it. For sodium hydroxide the core responses are consistent across sheets:
- Eye contact: rinse immediately with water for at least 15 to 20 minutes, holding the eyelids open, and get medical attention. Eye exposure does the most permanent damage the fastest.
- Skin contact: remove contaminated clothing and rinse the skin with plenty of water. Keep rinsing. Caustic burns deepen if the chemical is not fully flushed off.
- Inhalation of dust or mist: move the person to fresh air.
- Ingestion: do not induce vomiting, rinse the mouth, and get medical help immediately. Sending it back up burns the throat a second time.
Print those steps where the chemical is used, not just in the binder across the building. In an eye splash, nobody is walking to the office to look something up. And one honest note: the sheet tells you the steps, but it will not stock the eyewash station or make the water run. That part is on you.
What PPE, storage, and incompatibilities does the sheet call for?
Section 8, exposure controls and personal protection, tells you what to wear. For sodium hydroxide that generally means chemical splash goggles, a face shield when there is any chance of splashing, chemical-resistant gloves (nitrile, neoprene, or rubber), and an apron or protective clothing for larger jobs. Section 8 also lists the OSHA permissible exposure limit for airborne sodium hydroxide, which is why ventilation matters when you handle dust or mist.
Section 7, handling and storage, and Section 10, stability and reactivity, work together. Sodium hydroxide is stable in a sealed container in a cool, dry spot, but it reacts with several things a shop commonly has nearby:
- Acids: mixing sodium hydroxide with an acid produces a violent, heat-releasing reaction. This is why you never store caustics and acids on the same shelf or clean up one with the other.
- Water: adding water to solid sodium hydroxide releases a lot of heat quickly and can spatter. When you dilute it, add the caustic slowly to water, never water to the caustic.
- Aluminum, zinc, and tin: sodium hydroxide corrodes these metals and generates hydrogen gas, which is flammable and can build up in a closed container. That is a real reason not to store it in the wrong container or near light-metal fittings.
- Moisture from the air: solid sodium hydroxide absorbs water and carbon dioxide, so lids stay closed and containers stay labeled.
That list is not trivia. Most sodium hydroxide incidents in a small shop come from storage and mixing mistakes, not the planned use the chemical was bought for. Keep it segregated, keep it sealed, and label anything you decant it into with a GHS-compliant secondary label.
What do you do about a sodium hydroxide spill?
Section 6, accidental release measures, is the spill plan. For a caustic soda spill the sheet points you toward the same basic approach: keep people back, put on the PPE from Section 8 before you touch anything, and contain the spill so it does not spread or reach a drain or waterway.
For a solid spill, carefully sweep or scoop the material into a labeled container without raising dust. For a liquid spill, contain it with an inert absorbent, not with sawdust or another combustible or reactive material. Do not neutralize a large caustic spill with an acid unless you know what you are doing, because that reaction generates heat and can make things worse. Flush small residues with plenty of water once the bulk is up, and follow Section 13 and your local rules for disposal. Does my small business need the SDS on site if we only have a drain cleaner?
